Ebb Tides

Wind whorled headstones
Mark histories of maritime,
Over men who could tell
Of Greenland ice
And brought whittled tusks
For gifts.
The reach of the world
In the grasp of their ships
While wintering years away,
Their people
Scavenged the shoreline
For jewels of amber and jet,
Sold limpets and mussels
For fishing line bait
And mended the holes in their nets.
